For our 13th Summit, we are delighted to announce Brian Behlendorf, Executive Director of Hyperledger and Linux Foundation Public Health, and Jono Bacon, author of the award winning book People Powered, as our keynote speakers. Joining Brian and Jono, we have an amazing lineup of speakers: all new and familiar faces sharing their InnerSource stories with us for this event. Sessions

This is our first summit planned over multiple timezones so we look forward to seeing you there, no matter where in the world you are sitting. The summit will comprise of 3x 3.5 hour sessions, each timed for our community in particular regions. Each sessions will have a unique set of speakers. We welcome everyone to all of them. We will address three facets that make open source work, three facets that make corporate projects work, and three types of organizational cultures.
16:10 - 16:20	Daniel Izquierdo and Igor Zubiaurre (Bitergia)	Working on an InnerSource Organizational Model (Show Abstract) InnerSource has brought a new way to become more effective at the macro level by discovering and re-using existing software or scaling agile teams. The benefits are well known, as increasing the general engagement, being more innovative, giving space and empowering developers, and creating new more-technical oriented careers as the role of the Trusted Committer. Specifically, at the InnerSource Commons, we can find specific literature (e.g., patterns working group) giving insights for different roles in the community as the Product Owner or the Trusted Committer, but not that much focus on detailing the end to end of a software product that needs to become a service for customers. This talk aims at opening this discussion at the Commons with the goal of creating a common model that fits the InnerSource requirements, but at the same time makes sense from a software product line perspective. When defining the end-to-end model, this has to be open, transparent and foster collaboration by default. This has to create forums for discussion, spaces to safely share ideas and concepts across the organization. And this has to fit with each organization requirements (e.g., regulated environments).

InnerSource in government can add additional layers of complexity and institutional resistance. This talk will address building a strong foundation for InnerSource by focusing on organizational trust and modeling vulnerability. A counterintuitive approach to achieving widespread adoption that has made significant impact in government organizations.

08:20 - 08:35	Matt Cobby (NAB)	InnerSource at NAB (Show Abstract) National Australia Bank started its InnerSource journey in 2019 as an initiative to reduce duplication and increase re-use of tooling. Since then our InnerSource programme has become a strategic part of our NAB Engineering Foundations. On the way, we have learned many lessons and are exploring how to make it part of every engineer’s working experience and a sustainable community.
08:35 - 08:45	An Xu (DiDi)	Cultivating InnerSource Community by Adapting to the Paradigm of open source Community Development - Culture Before Code (Show Abstract) Didi developed InnerSource since July 2019, and, at the same time, Didi InnerSource Committee activated the operating mechanism and constructed a platform in support of inner cooperation. However, can the InnerSource culture be established only with the call of tech leaders? How to activate the programmers to participate in the InnerSource culture construction under no KPI standard and encouragement as usual? Can merely the Top-down exhortation promote the InnerSource development? The answer is definitely no. The combination of Down-top recognition with a Top-down guide is what we believe is the magic that can lead to the success of InnerSource development. Therefore, Didi proposed that “We should cultivate the InnerSource community by adapting to the paradigm of open source community Development” and has carried out a series of practices. For instance, we established an InnerSource community like group chat for sharing news; we used our InnerSource website to provide incentives through individual, project, and departmental dimensions; we take advantage of 1024 Programmer’s Day to popularize InnerSource ideas. After nearly 2 years of InnerSource operation, we finally laid a solid programmer foundation. They understand open collaboration, utilize the InnerSource tool, and are able to produce high-quality InnerSource projects collaboratively with multiple departments as the result. From the perspective of a company, it brings about some actual value, which stimulates the company to be more supportive of InnerSource development and governance.
08:45 - 08:55	Ankit Pandey (Wipro)	The role of HR policies in a successful InnerSource program (Show Abstract) We hear it time and time again: culture change is critical to a successful InnerSource program and is also one of the hardest but most beneficial parts of getting this right. Thankfully, you don’t have to do it alone. In this talk I’ll discuss how you can work with your HR team to establish policies and rewards that can help motivate team members of all levels to take the right steps on your InnerSource journey.
08:55 - 09:10	David Terol (Philips)	InnerSource at Scale – Fail Fast (Show Abstract) Back in 2016 we kicked off our first attempt at InnerSource by starting to build a tool that would bring all of fragmented source code together into a single catalog. We had source code scattered along different systems and technologies so the idea was to interface with each of these and surface all of the code we had by publishing the code in a catalog. We spent effort and time creating processes and practices to enable our existing teams and businesses to share and contribute to their code through that catalog interface. We listened to the concerns of all the businesses and incorporated their feedback into these processes. However, it didn’t scale up as expected, we had limited engagement and the culture change we hoped for was nowhere in sight. We took a step back and realized that we were trying to add InnerSource to existing processes without changing the culture and the way people collaborate. We also tried to keep our existing tool stacks and tailor them to make InnerSource work. This had its own problems too. We realized that the tools we use are a key part in igniting the culture change we were looking for. In this second attempt, we are taking all those good lessons learned, as well from other in the industry, and ensure both culture as well the tools are addressed when enabling InnerSource.

09:20 - 09:30	Dirk Riehle (FAU)	An Introduction to InnerSource and Transfer Pricing (Show Abstract) This talk reviews InnerSource in multinational corporations from a financial compliance perspective. It takes an accounting perspective and discusses the transfer pricing problem. This is a rerun from a workshop at the German Ministry of Finance.
09:30 - 09:40	Ana Jimenez SantaMaria (LF / TODO Group)	Building bridges between ISPOs and OSPOs (Show Abstract) More organizations across all industries are seeking different ways to build relationships with the open source ecosystem. Based on the results from the last OSPO 2021 survey, there is an increasing number of non-software organizations interested in investing and implementing open source initiatives. However, such implementation usually comes with a big sense of uncertainty when OS advocates try to convince their colleges and supervisors. One of the ways some organizations might consider to overcome this challenge, is to start simple and begin to foster an open-source culture within the walls of the organization (AKA InnerSource). Those who cultivate InnerSource initiatives and use them as the first step in their open source journey, may find easier to build an Open Source Program Office. Can InnerSource improve OSPOs adoption? How can we achieve this? What role should the different organizations, communities, and foundations play here? During this talk, Ana will share with the ISC Community some of the insights from the last OSPO survey and bring a discussion on how the different InnerSource and OSPO communities can work together to build a common path to guide emerging OSPOs on its open source journey, using InnerSource as the main ingredient to initiate healthy and sustainable open source initiatives.

In my talk, I will discuss it in detail, including they share the same target, the same value( the apache way), and they can help each other. I will also give my suggestion to organizations about how to adopt them together.
09:40 - 09:50	Mishari Muqbil (Zymple)	Piggybacking InnerSource on to Agile and DevOps (Show Abstract) For many organizations, InnerSource is a new concept, removed from the lexicons familiar to those in management. However, other terms such as Agile and DevOps are better recognized and there is much written on adoption of those disciplines. This talk briefly outlines some commonalities between Agile and DevOps and introduces strategies that can be used for repurposing existing material to aid InnerSource adoption.

An Innersource community can benefit many areas of your organization, but some people don’t care, dismiss it, or feel outright threatened by it. This makes things even harder if we need their support and involvement to make the community a success. How can we overcome these obstacles? Jono Bacon, a leading community strategy consultant and author, shows you how to convince the inconvincible, step by step. He also shares what he has learned about the business of building buy-in when it comes to community projects. Jono will break down the problem into a clear sets of pieces, map those to different parts of an organization, and walk through a crisp strategy and clear set of practical methods to build support throughout your Innersource community development process. He will also share the mines in the road he has discovered throughout his career and share how he dealt with them.
17:50 - 18:00	Joe Patrao (Bloomberg)	InnerSource Metrics, Value & ROI (Show Abstract) Every company is different and every InnerSource project comes with its own unique set of challenges. At Bloomberg, we encountered one such challenge. We used data to track some characteristics of our InnerSource contribution process, such as Mean Time To Merge, Pull-Request Engagement, etc.. Coupled with some process changes, our data-driven approach helped our InnerSource project grow. We will share some of the obstacles we faced and the lessons we learned from our experience.
18:00 - 18:10	Jesús Alonso Gutiérrez (Santander) Daniel Izquierdo (Bitergia)	Barriers to contribute in a more collaborative and transparent way (Show Abstract) Open source has been massively adopted by the banking industry in the last years and Santander Bank is part of this movement. Several open source technologies are now used and standardize as part of the bank toolchain and in the software development life cycle. However, the movement from a consumer role to an active open source producer one is far from being reached. This cultural change and strategic way of thinking is now changing the way the bank develops software. And this is aligned with the expectations at several levels: executives, middle managers, and developers. We are far from creating open source, but InnerSource is helping nowadays to build a common set of rules and processes, new ways of thinking through transparency and fostering collaboration, and tools to follow a similar developer experience across countries. This talk will share barriers found when adopting InnerSource principles within a bank as Santander and the mitigation strategies we’re following to make this happen. With full support from upper management, and a high developers and middle-managers engagement, the main pain point is about how to build together in a more open source way.

18:20 - 18:30	Sherin Mirza (Shell)	InnerSource - the glue between DevOps teams in a high performing organization (Show Abstract) We implement DevOps to optimize the delivery of products; the intent is to let Dev and Ops function as one team and drive structural continuous improvement. While useful and necessary to enable the Product Mindset, it is not enough for a high performing organization. With InnerSource, we implement the glue between the DevOps teams, allowing the organization to benefit from shared experience, technology intelligence, easier compliance with quality, security and user experience standards, elimination of duplication, and more consistency, which also leads to accelerated onboarding, higher transparency of work done, improved productivity, and a competitive edge in the hunt for talent. InnerSource is collective knowledge through connected communities. We need to establish an ecosystem and nurture behaviours that emphasize the importance of InnerSource, where contributors feel respected, included, and recognized for their merits.
18:30 - 18:40	Wayne Haber (GitLab)	Open Practices in GitLab (Show Abstract) In this session, Wayne will share how GitLab operates and breaks down barriers internally and with community contributors for the GitLab DevSecOps open-source product. He will also introduce GitLab’s public company handbook that is used to operate the company. Topics covered will include: ownership, responsibilities, maintenance, support, incentivization for internal and external contributions.
18:40 - 18:50	Arno Mihm (Microsoft)	InnerSource at Microsoft (Show Abstract) Microsoft is collaborating internally to drive engineering efficiency, satisfaction, pace of innovation and customer benefits. This session covers the learnings about measuring InnerSource behaviors and various approaches reflecting the diversity of business in Microsoft.
18:50 - 19:05	Elspeth Minty (Morgan Stanley)	Moving a Legacy Codebase to an InnerSource Model (Show Abstract) InnerSource is easy, right? All we need to do is make our repositories public and our users will flood us with contributions. Unfortunately it’s not as easy as this. In this session, I’ll review our journey to opening up a collection of older proprietary Java libraries to user contributions. I’ll talk about the differences between managing a repository where the same small number of developers worked on the code to one where any Morgan Stanley developer could pull the code and contribute. I’ll look at the benefits we’ve gained from going down the InnerSource road, as well as some of the potholes along the way.

An Xu (DiDi ChuXing)

Highly specialized and interested in enterprise InnerSource operations and community governance! Currently work at DiDi as the Head of Didi Open Source Office, with more than 10 years experience in integrated marketing communication and 6 years experience of an Internet startup, including 3+ experience on open source operations (Brand, strategy, developer ecology, commercial operation) and 3+ on business incubation & growth operation. Prior to joining Didi, I was one of the leading explorers of Uber’s business in the Asia-Pacific China region. Working at Uber and Didi makes me good at adapting to different cultures, integrating various resources, and pursuing effective cooperation.

Ana Jimenez Santamaria (The Linux Foundation)

Ana is the OSPO Program Manager at the TODO Group, a Linux Foundation project and an open group of organizations who want to collaborate on best practices, tools, and other ways to run successful and effective Open Source Projects and Programs. Formerly she worked at Bitergia, a Software Development Analytics firm, and she has recently finished her MSc in Data Science, whose final thesis focused on measuring DevRel’s success within Open Source development communities.

Ana is really interested in Open Source, InnerSource, and community metrics. She has been a speaker at some international conferences such as DevRelCon Tokyo, OpenInfraDays, DevRelCon London, ISC Summit or OSSummit NA.

During her spare time, you can find Ana practicing yoga, illustrating, or boxing.

Ankit Pandey (Wipro)

Ankit is a strategy consultant and new to the world of InnerSource and open source with just 5 months since he joined Wipro as a strategy architect for the Open Source Program Office. At Wipro, he helps organizations adopt open source as a strategic asset to achieve business goals. Prior to Wipro, Ankit has worked in roles involving strategy, competitive analysis, market intelligence and finance at HP and HPE. Outside of work, Ankit loves cooking and chess.

Arno Mihm (Microsoft)

Stemming from German roots, Arno settled in the mid-nineties in Seattle working with Microsoft on operating system improvements while in parallel helping to drive an industry wide systems management framework through the DMTF. Living German and American cultures and the exposure to diverse company cultures in industry standardization organizations formed his strong believe that collaboration is a key factor for success in business and in life. As Microsoft formalized the approach to collaboration through the foundation of the Microsoft Open Source Programs Office, Arno joined the team focusing on open source process improvements before turning his attention inwards to drive InnerSource at Microsoft.

Brian Behlendorf (Hyperledger and Linux Foundation Public Health)

Brian is the Executive Director for Hyperledger and Linux Foundation Public Health. Brian was a primary developer of the Apache Web server, the most popular web server software on the Internet, and a founding member of the Apache Software Foundation. He has also served on the board of the Mozilla Foundation since 2003 and the Electronic Frontier Foundation since 2013. He was the founding CTO of CollabNet and CTO of the World Economic Forum 2011-2012. He also worked at the White House’s Office of Science and Technology Policy in 2009 and the Department of Health and Human Services in 2010 on advancing the use of open standards through the use of open source software.

Clare Dillon (InnerSource Commons)

Clare Dillon has spent over 20 years working with developers and developer communities. Clare has been involved with InnerSource Commons since early 2019, when she helped set up NearForm’s InnerSource practice. Before that, Clare was a member of Microsoft Ireland Leadership Team, heading up their Developer Evangelism and Experience Group. Clare also works with Mosslabs.io to support the establishment of University and Government Open Source Program Offices and OSPOs++ globally, that can collaborate to implement public policy and trustworthy public services. Clare frequently speaks at international conferences and corporate events on topics relating to the future of work, innovation trends and digital ethics.

Danese Cooper (InnerSource Commons)

Danese Cooper is the Chairperson of InnerSource Commons and Vice President of Special Initiatives at NearForm, an Irish tech firm. Previously, she was Head of Open Source software at PayPal, CTO of Wikipedia, Chief Open Source Evangelist for Sun, and Senior Director of Open Source Strategies for Intel. Danese was also the inaugural chairperson of the Node.js Foundation. She concentrates on creating healthy open source communities and has served on the boards of Drupal Association, the Open Source Initiative, the Open Source Hardware Association, and she’s advised Mozilla and the Apache Software Foundation. Danese also runs a successful open source consultancy that counts the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the SETI Institute, Harris, and Numenta as clients. She’s been known to knit through meetings.

Daniel Izquierdo (Bitergia)

Daniel Izquierdo is co-founder and CEO of Bitergia, a start-up focused on providing metrics, consultancy and making the right decisions about open source and InnerSource projects. His main interests about open and InnerSource are related to the community itself, cultural change, and software process improvements through the analysis of the existing datasets.

In the last years, Daniel has worked as consultant to successfully adopt InnerSource at scale in large corporations and has contributed as an example to several assets as the InnerSource Maturity Model or the InnerSource Metrics Strategy handbook. He has closely worked with open source foundation as FINOS, Mozilla, Eclipse, and others to provide software development dashboards with community and process-related insights.

Daniel has participated as speaker in other open source related events as OSCON, Open Source Strategy Forum, Open Source Summits, or the InnerSource Commons.Daniel is currently part of the governing board of CHAOSS -Community Health Analytics for Open Source Software- and he is member of the Board of Directors of the InnerSource Commons Foundation.

David Terol (Philips)

David is an Engineering and Software Director with 20+ years of international experience working on Communication, Semiconductor, and Healthcare global leaders like Ericsson, Marvell Technology, and Royal Philips.

David is an advocate of open collaboration models like InnerSource based on high transparency, zero-wait, contribution over request, and low friction principles to break artificial internal boundaries which jeopardize true value delivery to their customers on complex organizations.

Dirk Riehle (FAU)

Prof. Dr. Dirk Riehle, M.B.A., is the Professor of Open Source Software at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg. Before joining academia, Riehle led the Open Source Research Group at SAP Labs, LLC, in Palo Alto, California (Silicon Valley). Riehle founded the Open Symposium (OpenSym, formerly WikiSym). He was the lead architect of the first UML virtual machine. He is interested in open collaboration principles, methods, and tools, most notably open source and inner source software development. Prof. Riehle holds a Ph.D. in computer science from ETH Zürich and an M.B.A. from Stanford Graduate School of Business. Elspeth Minty (Morgan Stanley)

Elspeth is the global lead of the Java Platform Engineering team at Morgan Stanley. She joined Morgan Stanley in London in 2001 and worked in Shanghai for 8 years before moving to Montreal in 2018. Elspeth has been a hands-on technologist throughout her career, working extensively with C++ and Java.

Georg Grutter (InnerSource Commons)

Georg Grütter is a social coding evangelist and developer advocate at Bosch.IO. He co-founded and led the first InnerSource community at Bosch. Georg is a passionate software developer with over 30 years of experience. Previously, he held various positions and roles at Bosch, Line Information, the Zurich System House, and DaimlerChrysler. Georg has created two open source projects, XHSI and stashNotifier. He’s an avid recumbent cyclist and mountain biker who also loves photography and chocolate.

Gil Yehuda (US Bank)

Gil Yehuda is the Head of Open Source at U.S. Bank. He is an active participant in open source and InnerSource activities both inside and outside his workplace. Previously Gil ran the open source program office at Yahoo for 10 years. Before that he was an analyst at Forrester Research covering workplace collaboration technologies. He drinks tea.

Igor Zubiaurre (Bitergia)

Igor feels motivated by projects/causes with meaningful social impact in general, and by Free Software and open data, in particular. In the past he tried to help at several free software communities, such as local LUG’s, FSFE, spanish Joomla community, the spanish free software SME’s ecosystem, DamnSmallLinux, PandoraFMS, FreedomBox, … He’s currently interested in online privacy and how to make free software sustainable. But his talk will address an InnerSource aspect from his professional side as IT governance sense-maker at Bitergia.

Isabel Drost-Fromm (Europace)

Isabel Drost-Fromm is Open Source Strategist at Europace AG Germany. She’s a member of the Apache Software Foundation, co-founder of Apache Mahout and mentored several incubating projects. Isabel is interested in all things FOSS, search and text mining with a decent machine learning background. True to the nature of people living in Berlin she loves having friends fly in for a brief visit - as a result she co-founded and is still one of the creative heads behind Berlin Buzzwords, a tech conference on all things search, scale and storage.

Jerry Tan (OpenAtom)

Jesús Alonso Gutiérrez (Santander Bank)

Jesús Alonso has been part of the Santander Bank for more than 15 years where he has developed business related activities, chief level support and currently works at the office of the CTO in the Digital Transformation Office. In the last months, he has led the InnerSource initiative within Santander Spain Technology and Operations, the technological branch of the Santander Bank in Spain. Jesús holds an MBA by the EAE Business School and has studied Economics at the Complutense University in Madrid.

Joe Patrao (Bloomberg)

Joe Patrao is an Engineering Manager at Bloomberg. He leads the UI development for the company’s Cross-Asset Trading Systems. His team’s mission is to help Bloomberg’s various trading businesses offer superior solutions to clients by providing the highest quality, fully featured trading system front-end available. Over the last 15 years, he has served at Bloomberg as a software engineer and team leader across various trading systems’ engineering teams, a domain where low latency and high responsiveness are the defining characteristics of the user experience. Joe is a big proponent of leveraging data to aid in decision-making wherever possible, and he continues to be a hands-on software engineer whenever time permits.

Jono Bacon is a leading community and collaboration speaker, author, and podcaster. He is the founder of Jono Bacon Consulting which provides community strategy/execution, workflow, and other services. He previously served as director of community at GitHub, Canonical, XPRIZE, and OpenAdvantage. His clients include Huawei, GitLab, Microsoft, Intel, Google, Sony Mobile, Deutsche Bank, Santander, HackerOne, Mattermost, SAP, FINOS Foundation, The Executive Center, data.world, Creative Commons, and others. He is the author of ‘People Powered: How communities can supercharge your business, brand, and teams’ and The Art of Community, a columnist for Forbes and opensource.com, founder of the Community Leadership Summit, founder of Conversations With Bacon, and co-founder of Bad Voltage. Matt Cobby (National Australia Bank)

Matt Cobby is an Engineering Manager at National Australia Bank. He currently leads the NAB Cloud Guild with the mission to train engineering teams, improve developer productivity and enable cultural change through the power of Inner Source. Previously, he ran a DevOps Practice helping teams with their own DevOps & Cloud transformations to migrate highly regulated workloads to the cloud. Matt has a passion for mentoring engineers and is an active supporter of technical & local communities that inspire people. Prior to joining National Australia Bank, he has worked in the UK & Europe across financial services, trading, energy, start-ups, incubators, consulting, media and academic research.

Mishari Muqbil (Zymple)

Being part of Open Source communities for 25+ years, I coach organizations in best practices and lessons learned from the Open Source world to build teams and organizations that are anti-fragile (embracing uncertainty and being stronger because of it), dynamic (have the ability to self-organize to take on challenges), and innovative (constantly upskilling and apply new knowledge in the organization).

Olivia Buzek (IBM)

Olivia gets excited about how we can use community development practices to guide software engineers towards building the best possible future for AI. She’s a senior engineering manager by day, a linguist at heart, and an aikidoka by night. In her current gig at IBM working on AI platforms, she’s creating developer-friendly tools to make AI applications easier to build and trustworthy for users.

Russell R Rutledge (WellSky)

Russ Rutledge is the Senior Director of InnerSource and Collaboration at WellSky. WellSky is a leading technology company offering a range of software solutions that help organizations across the healthcare continuum. In this role, Russ is leading a transformational change in the company towards broad and pervasive InnerSource as the normal way that work gets done. Russ’s drive and passion is to enable all software engineers to achieve incredible technical and business throughput via quality tooling and streamlined work process.

Russ is a founding member and director of the InnerSource Commons Foundation and currently serves as the foundation secretary. Previously, Russ founded and led the Developer Collaboration effort at Nike. He began his career as an engineer on feature and infrastructure development on the Outlook and OneDrive consumer websites at Microsoft.

Sherin Mirza (Shell)

Sherin Mirza has been appointed as Capability Centre Lead - Full Stack starting Oct 2021. Sherin joined Shell in 2014 as experienced hire under SECOE, driving adoption of software engineering best practices through DevOps embedment program, GitHub Enterprise Service Setup, InnerSource at Shell, DevKit portal, Personas and US Graduate Focal for ITY. Prior to joining Shell, Sherin worked across IT industry from various domains, for over 17 years with Dell, RR Donnelley, Baylor College of Medicine, and Halliburton. In addition, Sherin also brings in rich experience in software development methodologies, Data Analysis, product quality and Security, development of cloud-based solution, managing globally distributed development teams.

Wayne Haber (GitLab)

Wayne Haber, CISSP is Director of Engineering at GitLab for the growth, fulfillment, applied ML. He is also an SME for security at the company. He’s a veteran of three successful startups (including GitLab) and has experience in multiple areas including healthcare, finance, and security.

Zack Koppert (GitHub)

Zack has a passion for collaboration and an appetite for change. In previous roles he has led an innovation movement that got people to dedicate time to thinking outside the box, founded an Open Source office inside a 70 year old Tech company, and built software security training from the ground up. A force of inspiration, Zack is now in the middle of gardening an InnerSource movement inside US government.

What is the InnerSource Commons?

The InnerSource Commons (InnerSourceCommons.org) aka ISC is a consortium of representatives from almost a hundred companies and institutions. It utilizes open source methods to provide organizations pursuing inner sourcing a forum for discussing and improving the practice of InnerSource through the sharing of experiences (under the Chatham House Rule), creation and review of InnerSource patterns, and the open exchange of ideas.
